It didn't matter that this was one of the worst weather days that Toronto had seen in a long time. No rain, no gusty wind could stop the concert and ACSSU, one of the many participants from going on and rocking. On Saturday May 8, and to commemorate the Armenian, Greek and Assyrian genocides, the first ever 'United we Rock' concert was organized in downtown Toronto. ACSSU was there in full force, with over 20 members, volunteers and friends.
ACSSU had set up their own booth, displaying Assyrian information boards as well as giving away pamphlets and flyers about the Assyrian history, identity and genocide. ACSSU also volunteered to display the materials for the 'Jewish Student Federation', which was absent for the event due to the Sabbath day of rest.
We did gain a lot of good exposure in this event, and feel it is something that can help in getting more people to hear the truth about the genocides committed against the Assyrian, Armenian and Greek people. More than that, it is an event that highlights and brings attention to the issue of human rights in general, few which Assyrians are greatly concerned and involved.
The event was attended by various media outlets and well-known Toronto political figures including city of Toronto councilors and other Ontario and Canadian government officials.
ACSSU and all the other participants received many praises from the public for defying the terrible weather and still taking part in this. And ACSSU is determined to make this an annual event, as it greatly fits with our objectives and goals.
