On Saturday April 10th, 5 organizations came and coordinated together, to organize the Assyrian-Babylonian new year in Toronto. Also known as Akitu, this traditionally marks the beginning of harvest and spring for our ancestors, and Assyrians have continued to celebrate it till this day as the beginning of the Assyrian new year. This year marked the year 6760, according to the ancient Assyrian-Babylonian Calendar.
For the first time in a long time, the event was held outdoors, at an elementary school, in an area inhabited by a lot of Assyrians. This helped draw a good crowd to the event, who enjoyed different activities and programs, including:
-Akitu Presentation
-Cultural Bazaar
-Music and Dance
-Variety of food
-Lots of kids activities including a Bouncing Castle and Face Painting
There was something for every group and age category. The organizing committee did their best to accomodate everyone in the crowd.
It was very nice and beautiful to see our youth and organizations, all coming together, to produce one united and fine celebration. A celebration that truly symbolizes the true meaning of Akitu: renewal, happiness and the coming together of people.
This year's celebration was organized and made possible by the work and collaboration of a committee, made up of members from the following organizations:
- Assyrian Chaldean Syriac Student Union of Canada (ACSSU)
- Assyrian Aid Society of Canada
- Assyrian Society of Canada
- Assyrian Women's Union of Canada
- Assyrian Cultural Association and Administration of Ontario
